Robert

Let me share my enthusiasm with you.

Born, raised & live in Vienna

After I finished school, I worked at Vienna Airport and for airlines for a few years. I still find aeroplanes fascinating, but my passion has always been history. That was certainly also due to my wonderful teacher. Thank you very much, Prof. Weiss.

At that time, studying history didn’t really fit into my life plans. But I knew that one day I would do something with history. Well, it took a while and before I decided to turn my interest in the city and its history into a profession in 2018, I had – before I knew it – already been working at the renowned Viennese auction house Dorotheum for more than 12 years. So tourism, art and culture have been my daily occupation for more than 30 years.

After two years of training, I successfully passed the official exam to become an Austria Guide in spring 2019. And since then I have taken great pleasure in guiding my guests through Vienna.

Learn more about me and my guided tours...

Vienna, of course, is the city of the Habsburg emperors and their empresses, of Mozart, the Lipizzaners, the Sacher cake and the Danube waltz. And I love to show my guests this traditional side of my city. But for me, the interesting aspects of this city do not stop there.

Quite the opposite. Because what I find particularly exciting is Vienna’s more recent history – what happened after the monarchy? What was it like when Austria disappeared from the map in 1938 and became part of Nazi Germany? Life in the city during the Second World War. And how was the country rebuilt and how does modern Vienna present itself today? Tours on the outskirts of the city are as much a part of this as walks off the beaten track.

As a tourist guide who is not only clinging to the “glorious imperial times” of our country, it is important for me to show how history has shaped our modern city.

It may have taken me a while to find my passion. But now it’s all the more fun for me to take my guests on a journey of discovery through Vienna.
Let me share my enthusiasm with you.

RINGSTRASSE

Vienna’s magnificent boulevard in 3 walks
The construction of the Ringstrasse drastically changed the face of Vienna’s inner city. Today we find world-famous buildings and Viennese history streched out over just a few kilometres. Why does the Ringstrasse exist at all? Who lived there and who built the palaces of the rich and famous? Why is the Ringstrasse not an actual circle and what problems did the State Opera and the Burgtheater cause? There are simply too many questions to answer them all in one tour. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to the exciting story of the Ringstrasse in three walks.

Tour 1: Stubenring to Schubertring
Tour 2: Schwarzenbergplatz to Parliament
Tour 3: Rathauspark to Ringturm

JEWISH VIENNA

Jewish traces in Vienna

Come with me on a walk through the history of the Viennese Jewish community. Exile, ghettos, the Shoah are just as much a part of the history of Viennese Jews as Ringstrasse palaces, Oscar winners and world-famous scientists.
Let’s explore Vienna in the footsteps of 800 years of Jewish life.

You can choose from two tours:

Tour Innere Stadt / 1st district
This is where Jewish life flourished. From the first community in the Middle Ages to its heyday at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

Tour Leopoldstadt / 2nd district
Once the Jewish ghetto around 1700, this district was also the place where the Nazis herded together our Jewish fellow citizens before they would murder them in the camps.
Today, this district is the center of our Jewish community.

Cost per Tour EUR 180
Duration each about 2 hours
Dates by arrangement

These tours can also be combined into one longer walk.

Community buildings, football stars and the last executioner of Vienna
The 11th district of Vienna is probably not the first choice for visitors to Vienna. But this former suburb offers a long and interesting history. As one of the centres of Red Vienna fought over in the interwar period, the district is now a popular residential area.
If you would like to see Vienna off the beaten tourist track, I look forward to showing you the Simmering where I grew up.

OTTAKRING – SANDLEITEN

Housing, leisure, industry – a district tour around Sandleiten

The Sandleitenhof in Vienna’s 16th district is not only the largest municipal building built in Red Vienna – the legendary period after the First World War, when a Social Democratic city administration made Vienna a city of excellence. In Austrias First Republic, the baths and parks were built here – then and now a recreational area for the people of the district. But there was always hard work here too. Even today, the old factory buildings bear witness to the working-class district of Ottakring.
Accompany me on this tour of housing, leisure and industry in and around Sandleiten.
